Ferron the Blacksmith

three rivers ford blacksmith

Description:
Bio:

One of the more prominent inhabitants of Three Rivers Ford, Ferron the Blacksmith is well-known for his exquisite craftsmanship and widely respected despite his familial tie to a local ne’er-do-well, his younger brother Speck “Black-Eye.” Even Constable Fenwick tends to give Ferron grudging respect, but that may have more to do with his last attempt to levy additional taxes on the famed blacksmith ending in a five day tax-free holiday for all of Three Rivers. Fenwick still holds a grudge over the loses for that week. Ferron keeps to himself most of the time and can be found (but not heard) hammering away in his smithy most days and even nights. Last hot season, the village guard struggled with the heat in their heavy armor, so Ferron spent several late nights in his shop modifying their armor to ease their problem. The villagers could not stand the noise of constant hammering late at night. So they risked their pooled money on one of Old Nata’s dubious charms, and to everyone’s surprise, it worked. The crone created a Silencing Stone that was placed in Ferron’s shop. The stone allows Ferron to hear everything inside the shop, but the sounds of his hammering do not pass the walls. It was a rare moment of awe and suspicion regarding the crone’s abilities. Though Ferron is a powerfully-built, athletic man, his most distinctive feature is by far his mechanical prosthetic hand. Some time ago, Ferron lost his hand and wrist in a battle far from Three Rivers. At the time, there was no healer available to restore his arm, and it remained gnarled as it healed, permanently disfiguring him and threatening to end his craft forever. However, Ferron received The Hammer of Ferron as a gift from the father of a long time friend and wealthy adventuring partner. The hammer, part mechanical and part magical, bolts onto Ferron’s maimed arm and provides him the ability to continue smithing. The prosthetic is powerfully enchanted and grafts painlessly to Ferron’s arm and no other’s. It also grants him the ability to create magical weapons and armor – although he has yet to fully understand its powers. The Hammer is sentient, and speaks to Ferron, which has the blacksmith a bit unnerved. He tells no one about the voice he alone hears. However, Ferron often seems to be lost in his own thoughts. Some take this for eccentricity or deep thought and reflection. Most often, it is merely Ferron distracted by his hammer, which has a mind of its own.
